Great NACS news for non-Teslas

Not too long ago, I mentioned that I got a NACS adapter for my Kia EV9.

The overall vibe of that post was that I would still use CCS charging whenever possible, but that it was nice to fall back on the more omnipresent Tesla Supercharge network, when necessary.

Why? 400V.

Great Scott!  V4 Superchargers!

Like a number of newer EVs, my Kia uses an 800V architecture. Tesla Superchargers are limited to 400V, and my vehicle maxes out around 90kW on a V3 Supercharger. For reference, I’ve managed over 200kW on a CCS fast charger.

Cue the Tesla V4 Superchargers!

Supporting voltages of up to 1000V, and sporting longer cables (for the diverse charge port locations for non-Tesla vehicles), the Tesla V4 Superchargers are ready for fast-charging duty. A more detailed article from Evannex can be found here.

As Tesla moves from the dominant supplier of EVs in the market, to “just” and important player, it’s strategically smart of them to be the main travel charging infrastructure provider. It will be interesting to see how they scale up to take advantage of the increasing popularity of EVs, overall. I’m sure there’s a strategy, but it definitely feels a little wonky when you consider this and this. <sarc>Seems like an awesome place to work </sarc>.
