Into product protection plans or extended warranties?

Once again, I have proven that I have my finger on the pulse of exciting content that people are yearning for!

Just kidding!

The downside of being a team of one, is that nobody is telling me when I have a bad idea. Or a boring one.

Extended warranties. Yep.

Still, I do think I’m on to something. Rooted in my own experiences, I think there’s a large chunk of people out there that think that extended warranties or product protection plans are a good idea. Or, at the very least, I think that many of them situationally believe that there are times when it’s in your best interest to get one.

Ok, so that’s a little too absolutist. There are times when you can come out ahead on these products - just like there are times that you can walk away from a casino with extra money. In both instances, though, you beat the odds.

just one of the companies in this space…

For anyone that makes the contrary case, all I have to do is point to the scoreboard. Anecdotes, by themselves, have no statistical context. Warranty companies, on the other hand, report revenues in the billions. And they don’t go out of business due to insolvency. So, despite Mom, the non-Engineer making the case that she and our daughters are way ahead on what we’ve received from AppleCare (versus what we’ve paid into it for their devices), it doesn’t change the fact that we’re a statistical anomaly. If you didn’t glean it from the previous sentence, I’m an Android guy.

Please watch Dad Ruins Everything - Extended Warranties (and product protection plans). Also, feel free to send the video link to anyone you know to be an advocate of these products :)
